To support an individual who is aged over 21, by arranging a weekly currently to meet up in a public space* initially with a plan to move to home visits and accompany them to suitable activity (all within current guidelines)


To provide company and friendship, to help combat loneliness and bring comfort to many who are feeling alone. This will help to improve their emotional health and promote independence.


Befriending offers supportive, reliable relationships through volunteer befrienders to individuals who would otherwise be socially isolated.


By being a NT Face to Face Befriender volunteer you will be making an amazing difference to someone’s life through being a friendly voice connecting them with the outside world, reducing isolation and loneliness and bringing a much-needed smile to their day. 


Befriending often provides people with a new direction in life, opens up a range of activities and leads to increased self-esteem and self confidence.

  • Provide a weekly friendly and person-centred face to face meeting with an individual who is vulnerable or living in isolation to encourage independence, resilience & wellbeing.

  • The meeting to be in a public space* initially with a plan to move to home visits and accompany them to suitable activity (all within current guidelines).

  • To provide company and friendship (e.g. listening, talking, reading and sharing activities) and/or enable them to get out and about or pursue an interest.

  • Will be matched with an individual based on their interests and preferences to enable you to build up a relationship of friendship and trust

  • Support the individual to achieve their personal goals such as encouraging them to attend social groups e.g. coffee mornings or one-off events, if they feel they would like to, by using the What’s on Guide

  • To provide feedback from after each call via our online Volunteering app.

  • Feedback to the Wellbeing Team and report queries and concerns, as necessary

  • Always treat what you hear as confidential and sensitive

  • Follow any face to face guideline which will include health & Safety guidelines and Covid-19 guidance.

  • Adhere to the boundaries, policies and procedures set out Watford & Three Rivers Trust, uphold W3RT core principles, vision, culture and values as per the volunteer handbook

You don’t need any specific experience, but you should be:

  • Reliable, dependable, trustworthy and great at timekeeping

  • Non-judgmental, have a warm & friendly attitude and patient with a good sense of humour!

  • Open-minded, respectful, and compassionate

  • A great listener who also knows when to talk

  • An excellent communicator who knows their boundaries

  • Someone who is patient and able to empathise with individuals who may be lonely, vulnerable, elderly or have a disability.

  • Someone who enjoys talking to and meeting people.

  • Passionate about supporting, enabling and empowering people who are vulnerable or isolated

  • Willing to try new things and adapt to the needs of the person you are supporting.

  • Able to work without direct supervision.

  • IT, access app Smart phone, PC

  • You will be required to complete mandatory training before you begin your role. You will also receive continued support to help you to improve your confidence and understanding for this role

  • Training on the volunteering app provided via demo video and step by step guide.

  • Support from our Wellbeing Hub

  • There will be opportunity to attend (face to face or virtual) further training and/or networking events

  • Regular newsletters, updates and news from W3RT will be sent to you by email

Due to the vulnerable nature of the people we support we will require two references and also DBS check.  Further details will be discussed with you at recruitment.

2 hours per week minimum

(Volunteers are required to make a commitment for a minimum of 6 months)
